Biography

Lamanda (Beck) Spahr has German Roots.
Lamanda (Beck) Spahr was a Pennsylvanian.

Lamanda, daughter of Philip Beck and Sarah Runkel,[1] was born 24 March 1838 in Paradise Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1] She grew up there and by 1850 the family encompassed her parents Philip (age 41, farmer on land valued at $2,000) and Sarah Beck (38), Lamanda (12), and her siblings Lucy A. (11), Levi (9), Sarah Elizabeth (7), Leah (5), Reuben (4), Phillip (2), and Daniel (two months).[2]

They remained in Paradise Township in 1860, when the household consisted of Phillip (age 51, farmer), her mother Sarah (48), Amanda (22), and her siblings Louisa (21), Levi (20, farmhand), Sarah (18), Leah (16), Ruben (14), Phillip (13), Elizabeth Catharine (10), John Oliver (9), Josiah Jacob (7) and Noah Beck Spahr (1).[3]

On 18 September 1862 at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Abbottstown, Adams County, Pennsylvania, she married Emanuel Spahr.[4] They had children:

  1. Sarah Jane Spahr (1864–1872).[5][6]
  2. Joseph "Allen" Spahr (1865–1897).[5][7][8]
  3. Hiram "Jesse" Spahr (1866–1952).[5][9][10]
  4. Emanuel "Emery" Spahr (1868–1955).[5][11][12][13]
  5. Amanda E. "Amanda" (Spahr) Neiman (1870–1959).[5][14][15]
  6. David Henry Milton Spahr (1873–1958).[7][16][17][18]
  7. Noah Wilson Howard Spahr (1876–1959).[7][19][20][21][22]
  8. George Wesley Oliver Spahr (1876–1960).[7][23][24][25]
  9. Minnie Alma Katharine Spahr (1878–1950).[7]
  10. Reuben Edward Clinton Spahr (1881–1974).[26][27][28][29][30]

After their marriage Lamanda settled with her husband in Dover, York County, where they started their family. By 1870 the household included Lamanda (age 36), Emanuel (35, house carpenter), and their chldren Sarah Jane (7), Joseph "Allen" (5), Hiram "Jesse" (4), Emanuel "Emery" (3) and Amanda E. (1).[31]

Between 1870 and 1880, Sarah Jane died (1872), five more children were born (one not surviving), and the older children were likely working for neighbors. Thus, the household in Dover in 1880 consisted of Emanuel (age 41, day laborer), Lamanda (41), Allen (12), David Henry Milton (7), Noah Wilson Howard (3), George Wesley Oliver (3) and Mamea, probably Minnie Alma Katharine (1).[7]

Lamanda (age 62, mother of 11, eight living) and Emanuel (63, day laborer) were empty-nesters by 1900, when they lived in Dover Township.[32] The couple remained in Dover Township in 1910, but Emanuel (age 73) was now a truck farmer, while Lamanda (72, still mother of eight living children) continued to keep house.[33] The elderly Lamanda (age 87) and Emanuel (86) lived with the family of their son Reuben (38, farmer) and his wife Goldie (28) in 1920.[34] There they were surrounded by their grandchildren: Annie E. (12), David E. (10), Edna M. (7), Margaret M. (4) and Mary L. (1).[34]

After more than 50 years of marriage, Lamanda and Emanuel were parted by his death in 1923.[35]

Lamanda died of old age on 10 March 1934 in Mount Vernon, Skagit County, Washington.[1] Her remains were returned to York County for burial[1] at Lenhart Gerber Cemetery in Dover, York County.[36]

At least four of her sons died in Washington State: Emery Emanuel,[37] David,[38] Noah[39] and Wesley.[40]
