I think there is a problem with applying the South African alphabetical/numerical system for indicating lineage, as it only really works with males and females BEFORE they marry. So that Helena can be listed as Becker (or Bekker) b3, but not de Wet b3. 'b3' tells us that she is the third child of of the progenitor (Pieter Becker) who would be listed as a1. So I would suggest she gets an entry here as Helena (Bekker b3) de Wet. Her children would then be delineated after their father, de Wet b1.
Thanks Alta! The record actually clearly states the father as having the LNAB Becker so we know that this profile has to be merged into a duplicate Becker (I have looked, there are no duplicates, so I'll have to make one). Question of course is even though the surname or the father is clearly written on her baptismal record, whether that was his actual name. Until now we have found only a name on a shipping list for him but as he most probably came from Königsburg in what later would become Prussia / Germany, it might be the Dutchified version of his LNAB.
I think there is some misunderstanding here Liz. As it is this profile is correct. After marriage the wife (unless she's modern and perhaps declines to do so) takes on the husband's surname. It has never been the case in South Africa (or the Netherlands for that matter) that women (post-patronymically) retain their own LN'sAB after marriage (French / Dutch / Afrikaans / South African or whatever). For administrative & legal purposes (Dutch Roman Law) in deeds or wills and indeed baptismal records, one will often find the original LNAB though. Another exception - the slave women - 'imported' from places as Timor or Bengal. The only reason is that they were at times in multiple relationships even when married and were known as for example 'Big Kathryn from Bengal' - a name that sort of 'stuck' through the centuries and is also now used for identification purposes.
Liz, I agree with you, but this seems to be a contentious issue for some. I prefer identifying (for genealogy & otherwise) people by their birth surnames. For me, it makes genealogy searches easier. However I don't know what the naming conventions of that era were.
