Jakob was in the US Navy serving as Chief Machinist aboard the USS Maine when the ship was sent to Havana in 1898 to protect American interests there. The ship exploded in the Harbor of Havana, Cuba during what became known as the USS Maine Disaster. Jakob was killed during the explosion.
