Biography

Vincent Edward Becker was born in 1887 in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, to Mary (St. Lawrence) Becker, age 26, and Edward Becker, age 35.

Vincent's sister Helen Becker was born in 1890 when he was three years old. His sister Annie Becker was born in 1896 when he was nine years old.

He was a scholar in 1901 according to the 1901 census. He lived on Terenure Road with his father, Edward, Vincent's mother, Mary, his sister Helen, his sister Annie, Ellen Stafford, a nurse, Maria Blake, a servant, and John St Laurence, a visitor (and likely Vincent's grandfather).

He might have marveled at the sights of the 1907 Irish International Exhibition.

In 1911, Vincent lived at 28 Terenure Road, Rathmines & Rathgar West with his father, Edward, Vincent's mother, Mary, his sister Helen (who is referred to as Ellen in this record), and a general domestic servant, Kathleen Andrews. He was a tea dealer.

In 1916, he lived on Brookline Terenure Road, Dublin, with his parents.

He married Eveleen (Doherty) Becker in Dublin on January 23, 1916, when he was 29 years old.

In April 1916, he may have witnessed events during the Easter Rising.

His daughter Mary (Becker) Jackson was born on April 12, 1917.

He lived at 2 Mayfield Road from 1917 to 1928 with his wife, Eveleen, and his children. He paid 27 pounds in property taxes annually.

His son Robert Becker was born on November 22, 1918.

Vincent may have witnessed or heard accounts of the events during the Battle of Dublin in the summer of 1922. He might have been one of the half-million people who witnessed Michael Collins’ funeral cortege in Dublin in August 1922.

From 1929 to 1940, he lived at 3 Terenure Road with his family. He paid 29 pounds in property taxes annually.

His father Edward passed away in October 1932 at the age of 80.

From 1935 to 1947, Vincent was the owner of the properties of Becker Brothers, Ltd., a tea merchant company. The addresses were 17 North Earl Street (acquired in 1935-property tax of 100 pounds), 31 Wicklow Street (acquired in 1939-property tax of 105), and 8 South Great George's Street (acquired in 1947-property tax of 270 pounds).

From 1931 until his death, he lived at 35(7?) Terenure Road with his family. He paid 39 pounds in property taxes annually.

Vincent Edward Becker died on May 30, 1948, in Dublin, Dublin, Ireland, when he was 61 years old.

His effects in England totalled 81 pounds, 11s. 8d. They were given to his sons Robert and Vincent.
