Biography

OBITUARY: Funeral services for Betty Jo Knippa, 86 of Giddings, are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings with Rev. Robert Tiner and Vicar Josh Hahn officiating. A committal service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Fedor, Texas. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. at Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home in Giddings. The family will be present for visitation Tuesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Betty Jo (Becker) Knippa was born on January 15, 1935 in Kingsville, Texas, the daughter of Louis Edward Becker and Irma Augusta (Urban) Becker. She was baptized on February 10, 1935 and confirmed on March 21, 1948 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kingsville. Her confirmation verse was John 5:24, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” Betty Jo was united in marriage to Lawrence Quintus Knippa on May 31, 1953 also at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kingsville by Rev. Martin Studtmann. She worked for many years at Kleberg First National Bank in Kingsville where she retired as a vice-president. Betty Jo had been an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings where she was involved in the L.W.M.L., the Dorcas Circle, and the Singles for Jesus group. She was also a member of the Giddings Garden Club, the Giddings German Club, the Texas Wendish Heritage Society, and volunteered with Rejuvenation. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, and sewing.

Betty Jo passed away the afternoon of Tuesday, December 14, 2021 in Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis & Irma Becker; her husband, Lawrence Knippa, and five brothers-in-law, E.C. Knippa Jr. & his wife, Madeline, Eddie Knippa & his wife, Betty, Freddie Knippa & his wife, Ann, James Knippa, and Rudy Knippa.

Betty Jo is survived by her two children, Cynthia Scruggs & her husband, Richard of Houston and Mark Knippa of Cypress; four grandchildren, Heather Waters & her husband, Matt of Houston, Julia Scruggs of Houston, Taylor Fisk & her husband, Kelby of Cypress, and Trey Knippa of Cypress; three great grandchildren, Henry and Caroline Waters of Houston and Brynlee Fisk of Cypress; sister, Sharon Davis & her husband, Charles of Union, Missouri; two sisters-in-law, Jane Schimank & her husband, Clarence of Fedor and Jeanette Knippa of Lincoln; one brother-in-law, Leroy Knippa & his wife, Delores of New Braunfels, as well as several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Pallbearers will be Forrest Michalk, Mike Freese, Jonathan Knippa, Nathan Schimank, Kim Knippa, Dale Kelley, Trey Knippa, and Marcus Schimank.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Giddings or to the Texas Wendish Heritage Museum in Serbin.
