Biography

James Beckett, Jr. was born 20 August 1810[1] likely in Kanawha County, Virginia,[2] to James Beckett and Margaret Pedan.[3] He first married Matilda Porter[4], likely around 1832.[5] Matilda died in the Winter of 1838/9 in Platt County, Missouri; he then married Sarah Paul,[6] sometime before 1842., One transcription of a burned family bible gives a death date of 14 June 1867,[7] but a manuscript from his daughter, Margaret Ann Beckett Brown, gives his death date as 14 Jun 1857.[8]

Son William Beckett, was born in Cabell County, Virginia on 12 May 1832 to James Beckett and his first wife, Matilda Porter. (Birth date based on age at death.)[9]

James’ marriage to Sarah Paul, daughter of George & Jane Paul likely took place shortly after his return to Cabell County and before the birth of daughter Virginia Jane on 4 August 1842.[10] It also seems possible that this was not Sarah’s first marriage since she would have been about 30 years old at the time of the marriage.
