Biography

Jim represented Ireland in Water Polo in the Paris Olympics of 1924.

Born at 1 Prince William Terrace, Beggars Bush to William Beckett and Fannie Crothers. Present at birth was Margaret Crothers of 2 Prince William Cottages.

He was a medical practioner.

He qualified as a doctor in 1912 and, after serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps in World War I, worked as an anaesthetist at the Adelaide Hospital in Dublin for a quarter of a century.

His only Olympic appearance came in his 40th year when he captained the Irish water polo team on their Olympic debut in1924. This was the culmination of a career which saw him represent Ireland at the sport 25 times between 1902 and 1925.

James married Margaret Mary O'Connell in July 1924.

The marriage arranged between Dr. J. Beckett, Black rock, and Margaret (Peggy), twin daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. O'Connell, Arona, Clonakeagh, will take place quietly towards the end of July.
