He emigrated from England to Canada where he married Antoinette Westover Schnare (daughter of James and Amelia Schnare) on 3 June 1873 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.[3]
They had at least four children. Their daughter Amelia was born in Canada before the family moved to the United States.
