'NORWICH MERCURY: Saturday, July Ist. 1843 COUNTY SESSIONS; 27th. June, 1843. Francis Beckham, aged 34, and Henry Beckham, aged 36, charged with stealing one sheep the property of James Mack, farmer, of North Tuddenham on 4th. April last, Mr. Evans for the prosecutor and Mr. Palmer for the defence. Benjamin Engledow, shepherd to James Mack, deposed in April last he found the skin and entrails of a sheep in a field. All the sheep were safe the previous evening. Benjamin Engledow knew the field in which the skin was found on the same side as the living sheep by the hurdles he observed foot-marks which led to the prisoners' house in the adjoining parish. Mark Yorke, police officer, deposed he went to the prosecutor's field and thence to the cottage of the prisoner Francis Beckham; there he found a basket which contained two shoulders of mutton; from thence he went to the cottage occupied by the other prisoner, and in a dung heap there they found a sack in which was the whole carcase of a sheep except for the shoulders. Edward Jones, police officer, deposed he searched the cottage and found the mutton; it was quite warm. Wace Philo deposed he compared the mutton found in the possession of the prisoners with the skin found in the field of the prosecutor. They certainly belonged to one sheep. Mr. Palmer addressed jury for the prisoners and contended that there was not sufficient evidence of the mutton ever being in their possession; and called several witnesses to character. Guilty; ten years transportation." - Notes: Mr Mack was 56 (in 1843) and farmed 130 acres. He had 8 labourers (1851 census). Engledow lived in "Rotten Row" Mitford. "Ware" or Wace Philo was a butcher and Beerhouse keeper at Mattishall in 1851.
- Conviction of sheep stealing; 1843; Pentonville Prison. 21,22 Francis & Henry had been sentenced to 10 years gaol in Pentonville Prison in 1843 for allegedly stealing a sheep. (There is some anecdotal evidence to suggest they may have been "set up/framed"). After 18 mths, Frances and Henry were exiled to Australia where they were indentured to a farmer with full board and reasonable enough pay to save for the passage of their wives and children who arrived in 1849. ~ Info from 'The Beckham Story' from Australia
GEELONG ADVERTISER: 9 December 1872: reference to Francis BECKHAM, farmer of Murgheboluc : A singular thing is reported to have occurred on the farm of Mr. Francis BECKHAM, at Murgheboluc, during the thunderstorm on Friday afternoon. The lightning was seen to strike a large cock of hay, from which smoke commenced to issue. Of course there was a rush to put the fire out, and then it was found the lightning had gone clear through the hay at the top without injuring it, it being very damp, and had set fire to the hay at the very bottom of the stack. They took all the top hay off, and with it afterwards endeavoured, when they saw where the fire was, to smother the flames, which, however, burnt so fiercely, that it was some time before they could be extinguished.
Petition against Land Pegging; 1875; Mount Jeffcott. 29 Page1: The area had been declared a timber reserve as early as 1875, when after Francis BECKHAM had pegged out a block which extended up the slopes to almost the summit of Mount Jeffcott, other selectors objected, and a petition signed by 19, including…. That selection should not be allowed any nearer than 20 chains to the Mount all round was granted.
2 Oct 1885; South Jeffcott, Vic, Australia. 30 Page 97: For instance, on October 2, 1885 the DONALD EXPRESS reported: while moving a log yesterday afternoon Mr. BECKHAM Snr. Of South Jeffcott had one of his fingers bit by a black snake, about four feet in length. He had the presence of mind to suck the injured part, immediately went home and made an incision of the finger and then came into Donald to be treated by Dr. Woinarski, who further incised the wounded part and applied ammonia. Mr. Beckham was enabled to return home shortly afterwards, comparatively free from danger.
