Biography

Hartwell Proctor Beckham was born about 1820 in Wayne, Tennessee, United States, son of Green Beckham and Martha Patty (Proctor) Beckham.

Hartwell (~19) married Nancy Downing (~14) in 1839 in Wayne County, Tennessee. Their children were:

  1. John Beckham
  2. Roddy Beckham
  3. Amanda
  4. Becky
  5. Columbus
  6. Martha

Hartwell died about 1861 in Lunenburg Township, Izard County, Arkansas aged ~41. He is buried in Lunenburg Cemetery, Lunenburg, Arkansas.

The following story was provided the Heidlebaugh's by Virginia Beckham Carroll:

This is a little story told to me by my grandfather George Mayberry Beckham, son of Roddy B Beckham and grandson of Hartwell Proctor Beckham. This story has been told to all of the Beckham children and grandchildren for three generations. This happened at Harris Bottom on the White River in Arkansas.

Hart Beckham was a young man with a wife Nancy Downing and five small children living in Izard County when he had a misunderstanding with one of his neighbors by the name of Bill Franklin. White (sic ?) Hart came riding his horse home one evening, Bill Franklin lay hid by the side of the road, and with one shot from his shot gun, Hart Beckham lay dead. Nancy Downing Beckham was left a widow with five young children to care for, three sons and two daughters. The two sons Roddy and Jack were going to avenge their father's death by killing old Bill Franklin, but he left the country.

Note: There are other stories about Hart Beckham in the Heidlebaugh collection.

Beckham-547 and Beckham-182 appear to represent the same person because: I added a duplicate record in error.
