Research Note

This may be another internet construct; I haven't studied it long enough to say for sure. There is no source that categorically says Elizabeth is a Beckham. There are some points to consider:

  1. The Baskets were neighbors to the Beckhams
  2. The families are intimate enough to be witnesses and/ or executors on wills and other instruments for a couple of generations.
  3. Given the closeness of the family, it makes sense to consider her a Beckham, and that seems to be what many have done.
  4. If she is a Beckham, then she would have to be sister to William Beckham because of the age cohort.
  5. We have to consider that she may be a second wife. This puts her more squarely in the Beckham camp so to speak, because she would have married in Granville County, and that is where the Beckham family lived.
  6. If she is a second wife then we have to look at the children dates of birth and realize she may not be their mother.
  7. Considering she and William married prior to arrival in Granville County, which makes it more likely she is mother to the children, then there really is no reason to think she is a Beckham, as they would have simply moved next to them.
  8. Finding a marriage record or place or residence prior to Granville County will provide the answer.
  9. It is possible that William Basket moved from Middlesex County to where the Beckhams lived and met and married Elizabeth, then moved the family to Granville County around 1755. Or else he lived in the area and owned no land prior to that time. But then the Beckhams did not get there until about 1742, so we still have a dilemma. This is what happens when you think about these things critically.
