Note: Immigrated to RSA in 1855/56 in search of a new life and opportunities.

They settled at Port Elizabeth and farmed in the Van Stadens area (de Stades) for 14 years, during which 6 more children were born: William (1856), Thomas (1859?), Elizabeth, Julia Rose (1863), Rachel (1865) and Jane Agnes (1868). During the latter part of the tenancy a massive drive was under way for immigrants to the Argentine, following the independence from Spain. As farming and the generaleconomy in the Eastern Cape had become unprofitable and chancy, the Beckleys and their neighbors the Waspes, packed up and set sail in March 1868 for Argentinia. The settled in the Alexandra (Alejandra) colony in the Santa Fè district (230 kms north of Santa Fè town). The Waspe family (originally from Wales?) had been farming at Buffelsfontein, in the PE district since emigrating in 1850 from Suffolk. Wayne Beckley [wayne@@beckley.co.za]. <p>
