John Beckman arrived in New Zealand as Johan Bachman. He was then known as John Beckmann, but dropped one n and became John Beckman.

Vera Hunt in her book "Campbelltown Rongotea" mentions 9 children going to Rongotea School: Angela, Frances, Rosa, Alice, Edward, Emil, Arthur, Blanche and Maude. p. 245

Obituary in Manawatu Times 15 August 1927. Birth place given as Dantzig, Germany. Arrived in New Zealand 1874. Lived to 89 years of age and had 12 children. 10 still alive at his death. [1]

Manawatu Times 16 August 1927 The funeral of the late Mr J. Beckmann took place on Sunday afternoon at the Rongotea cemetery. Following a service conducted by Father Harnett of Fielding in the Catholic Church, the hearse departed for the cemetery followed by a lenghtly line of cars. Another short service was conducted by Father Harnett at the graveside, after which the casket was lowered and the body laid to rest. There were numerous beautiful wreaths placed on the graveside by the large number of friends. The pall-bearers were Messrs A. and C. Parrant, Amil Beckmann, J. Leen, J. Robinson and J. Goodwin Auckland Star 15 August 1927 The death has occurred at Rongotea of Mr J. Beckmann. Born in Danzig, 89 years ago, he had been resident of New Zealand for 53 years. He first took up residence at Makino, but left there in 1881 and went to Campbelltown, then the name of Rongotea township. He took up a block of bush land which he made into an ideal farm, working it until 20 years ago, when he retired. Mr Beckmann's wife died ten years ago. He leaves a family of ten and there are 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Rongotea Cemetery Section 20, Block 19.

In the online database "Polish History of New Zealand" I discovered the family listed under Bachman and they arrived on the Humboldt in 1875 from Hamburg a journey of 108 days. They are listed as Johan 36, Pauline 28, Rosalie 2 and Francisca 9 months. They arrived in Wellington on Tuesday 26th January, 1875.
