Biography

Frederick or Friedrich was born in 1858. He married Hermina Salvester in Volhynia in about 1880. In July 1905, they immigrated to Canada with their five children: Mathilda, Carl, Emil, Herman and Emma. They settled in Steinbach, Manitoba. In 1908, Fred, Hermina, Emma and Herman moved to Jansen, SK and farmed a half mile east of the village. Son, Carl, died in 1922 while visiting his parents in Jansen. They buried him in Jansen Cemetery. Hermina died in 1927 and Fred moved into Jansen. In 1926, he was the Zion Lutheran Church janitor for $35.00 a year. He also tolled the church bells at funerals and weddings. Fred passed away in 1941 and was buried in Jansen Cemetery.
