Biography

Sarah Beckwith, daughter of Joseph Beckwith and Susanna Tallman, was born in 1677.[1]

However, this profile may represent two different women, the other being "Anna".

Death

On 26 March 1722, Joshua Hempstead of New London wrote in his diary:

"Mond 26th fair. I was at home all day. fencing & Transplanting ye Nursery in Smiths lot. Lt William Minors Wife buried, died a Saturday of a Lingering Sickness."

Research Notes

Almost every record for the wife of William Minor refers to her as "Anna". There are 26 records for "Anna" at FamilySearch. The only two records for "Sarah Beckwith" as wife of William Minor are imported references. One is from Clarence Almon Torrey's New England Marriages Prior to 1700 via ancestry.com. Page 511 contains the entry: "Miner, William ( 1670-1725) & Anna?/ [Sarah Beckwith]; b 1690; Lyme, CT" ("b" stands for birth of first child).

The other source is from the entry for William Minor in John Miner's genealogy, Thomas Minor, descendants, 1608-1981 self-published in 1981. Miner gives the marriage date as "about 1693". Miner does not address the name conflict, which is surprising because the birth records for the children, according to FamilySearch, are all under the name "Anna". The birth records in FamilySearch are transcriptions without images. Miner does remark, ""The distribution of William's estate to 'the eldest daughter Susanna Minor, second daughter Sarah Minor...', which would usually indicate the first daughter named for a grandmother and the second for the wife as was customary."

Three Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications weigh in on the subject, with one from 1927 stating William Miner's wife was "Anne Lyle", one from 1954 stating her name was "Anna Lyle", and one from 1969 stating she was "Sarah Beckwith".

Someone on FamilySearch made the decision to solve the name conflict by giving Sarah Beckwith the middle name Anna.

"Wife of a William Miner died 9 Nov 1732 in Lyme, CT (TR: L2 p40); perhaps a second wife of this William?"
This statement also appears, without the source clue, on the Miner Descent website https://minerdescent.com/2010/05/13/william-miner/.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sarah by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sarah:

Anna Lisle appears to be a ref for another wife - M 1691 - but questionable

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/2:2:SGGF-53J takes the opposing view, stating that there WERE two wives and that one of them died young, attaching the children to Anna Lysle...

This is out of date, but the basic problem of two names remains.

Sarah Beckwith, was born to Joseph and Susanna (Tallman) Beckwith 14 April 1677.

She married William Minor/Miner about 1693 (their first child was born 27 April 1694, when she had just turned sixteen years old!.

She died three years before her husband.

There does not appear to be any logical reason for adding "Lisle" to Sarah Beckwith - it could not have been the last name of another spouse, and middle names were not used in the era when she was born.

Could someone post a source for the name "Lisle", or remove it from her profile?

"Anne Lyle in the U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications, 1889-1970" (1927) and "Anna Lyle in the U.S., Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications" (1954) - but I don't know the source for "Lisle". See added Research Notes. According to the transcribed records on FamilySearch, the children's birth records all give the mother's name as "Anna".

Beckwith-30 and Beckwith-22 appear to represent the same person because: OK - same

Beckwith-25 and Beckwith-22 are not ready to be merged because: More work required

Beckwith-25 and Beckwith-22 appear to represent the same person because: This looks like a probable match. Husband is William Miner, not Clement Miner. Unfortunately, there is no information on Beckwith-25 to match up to.
