Biography

Arthur Beckwith, son of Roger Beckwith Esq. of Aldburgh, was baptized 16 August 1615 at St Mary's in Masham.[1]

He was the captain of the Parliamentary Army.

He died in 1642 at the age of 27. He was killed in action during the battle of Marsten Moor, Yorkshire, England. Arthur Beckwith gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Parliamentarian Army. He lived at Aldborough, Yorkshire, West Riding, England. His wife, Mary Wyvill, was the daughter of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, 2nd Bt.

Sir Roger Beckwith, 1st Bt.d. 6 December 1700 was the son of Arthur Beckwith and Mary Wyvill.1 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Clapham, daughter of Sir Christopher Clapham and Margaret Oldfield. He married, secondly, Elizabeth Jenings, daughter of Sir Edmund Jenings, at Ripon, Yorkshire, North Riding, England. He died on 6 December 1700, having shot himself. His will (dated 7 May 1690) was probated on 28 February 1700/1. He was buried at Ripon, Yorkshire, North Riding, England. Sir Roger Beckwith, 1st Bt. was created 1st Baronet Beckwith, of Aldborough, co. York [ENGLAND] on 15 April 1681.


Sir Roger Beckwith, 2nd Bt. was born on 13 June 1682.1 He was the son of Sir Roger Beckwith, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Jenings. He married Jane Waddington, daughter of Benjamin Waddington and Mary Parker, on 10 October 1705. He died in May 1743 at age 60, without male issue, having shot himself. His will (dated 26 March 1730) was probated in January 1749. (suicide must run in that line!). Sir Roger Beckwith, 2nd Bt. succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Beckwith, of Aldborough, co. York [E., 1681] on 6 December 1700.1 He held the office of Sheriff of Yorkshire from 1706 to 1707.

Arthur Beckwith was the son of Sir Roger Beckwith, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Clapham.1 He died in 1700, without issue.

Sir Marmaduke Beckwith, 3rd Bt. was born in January 1687.1 He was the son of Sir Roger Beckwith, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Jenings. He died after 1771. He was a third son hence the 3rd Baronet title.

Sir Marmaduke Beckwith, 3rd Bt. was a merchant at Virginia, U.S.A..1 He imported race horses from England along with George Washington. He succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Beckwith, of Aldborough, co. York [E., 1681] in May 1743.

Sir Jonathan Beckwith, 4th Bt. was the son of Sir Marmaduke Beckwith, 3rd Bt. He died after 1811.

Sir Jonathan Beckwith, 4th Bt. succeeded to the title of 4th Baronet Beckwith, of Aldborough, co. York [E., 1681] after 1771.

On his death, his baronetcy presumably became extinct.

This claims Arthur Beckwith was killed in 1642, in the Battle of Marston Moor, which happened 2 years later in 1644. His findagrave memorial https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/143636348/arthur-beckwith agrees he was killed in battle, but in 1642. This error should be corrected.
