Biography

Luther Bedel, Jr., 1784 Virginia ~ 1847 Indiana, was the son of Luther Bedel (b. ca. 1755 VA) and Elizabeth (b. ca. 1759 VA). He married Sarah Ramsey in Kentucky in about 1805. They had eleven children. [1] Refers to “Memories” section of this link for photos of documents, including his last will and testament.

Luther was born in 1784. FindAGrave has his birthplace in error as Ohio. His family was an old Virginia family who later settled in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. Luther was living in Clark, Indiana by 1811, and was eye witness to the Pidgeon Roost Massacre of 1812. He served under Gen. Harrison and was wounded and captured in the Battle of Tippecanoe. He later settled in Jackson County, Indiana (by 1814), and cleared 200 acres and built a log house, where the first area religious meeting (Missionary Baptist) was held. Luther and his wife Elizabeth are buried in Bedel Cemetery, Uniontown, Jackson, Indiana. [2]

In 1820, the Luther Bedel family lived in Jackson County, Indiana. He engaged in agriculture. [3]

In 1830, the Luther Bedel lived in Jackson, Jackson,Indiana. [4]

NOTE: Luther Bedel (1784-1847) was buried in Bedel Cemetery as was his son Luther Bedel Jr (1828-1877). There are no grave markers or cemetery information in the Bedel Cemetery for any older Luther Bedel with a wife Elizabeth. I wrote the Luther Bedel biography for the History of Jackson County, Indiana and since then in many years of research have not been able to confirm his parents. Some of his children who lived long enough to reach the 1880 census list OHIO as their fathers birthplace. I have never seen any documentation listing an older Luther Bedel with wife Elizabeth on any deed or other record. There is a Goodspeed biography for a Bedel family member, but again this does not mention a Luther-Elizabeth couple. David Travillion Bunton
