Biography

Married Mariam Dorlon in about 1768.

Resided at Hempstead, Long Island, NY [Ceylon H. Bedell, Bedell Family Notes, p 4]. Tredwell adds Joseph, spouse and children in his Additions and Corrections on the suggestion of Mr. Wardwell. He was most likely the Joseph Bedel who voted to send no deputies to the Provincial Congress 7 Nov 1755 [Revolutionary War Papers vol 1, p 185], and on 19 Jan 1776 apologized and swore that he had surrendered all his arms [Revolutionary War Papers vol 54, p 28].

Peters, Powells of the Hudson Valley sources and notes: 1) Walter Burke letter, 9 Oct 1980; 2) Harold Smith Papers, New York State Library.

If Joseph's son, John, was already living away from his father's home at the age of 18, this is the likely Joseph recorded in South Hempstead in the 1790 US Census with 1 male over age 16 and 4 females. In the 1800 US Census in Hempstead, this is the only Joseph who fits the age chronology of over 45 years of age with a wife over 45. There is also one male child in the household reported as under age 10. Perhaps this is a grandchild?

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
