Biography

Cornelius was born on 12 August 1814 in New Jersey. He was the son of Zacharia Bedell and Margaret Cornelius.[1] He had a sister, Epheline, and at least one brother. Henry is the only one proven brother, but there may have been George, Jacob and Zachariah, Jr.[2]

His father, Zachariah Andrew Bedell, drowned and died on 21 August 1831 in Ohio, probably residing at Oxford in Coshocton County. His mother , Margaret Cornelius Bedell, died on 22 September 1838, probably in the same location.

Cornelius was married on 26 December 1847 in Miami county, Ohio to Amelia Ann Sayre (Maiden name unknown).[3] Ann was born in Canada about 1821, parents unknown. Ann had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Sayer, born about 1841 in Ohio.

This family moved to Indiana and they were living in Harrison, Kosciusko county, in 1850, next door to his sister Epheline and a few houses away from Henry, his brother.[4] Cornelius was a farmer, born in New Jersey about 1815.

By 1860 they were in Marion Township, Linn county, Iowa.[5] Cornelius C 46 was a farm tenant who owned no real estate and $500 in personal property. His wife, Ann 39 and daughter, Mary E 19, were at home. Living with them were H. Stuckslager 35, a stock trader, and Hugh Montgomery 21. H. Stuckslager owned $2500 in real estate and $1000 in personal property, was single and may have been the landlord of Cornelius.

Afton, Cherokee county, Iowa is where they lived in 1880 and Mary is still at home.[6] Cornelious 66 was a farmer. His wife, Ann 60, was at home. His step-daughter, Mary E. 30 was a milliner. Two wards, a young boy, Wm Thompson 9, and a young girl, Mary J. Hoskins 11, were living with them. The mother of Mary J. had died in 1876. They had a farm laborer living with them also, Wm Ogle 25.

In 1885, they were living in Waterman, O'Brien county, Iowa with a young girl who may be their granddaughter.[7] Cornelius 70 was a farmer and Ann 64 was keeping house. Mary Jane Hoskins 16, had been living with them for about nine years. Their property was described as SW 1/4 of NW 1/4.

His wife, Amelia Ann Sayer Bedell, died on 18 July 1886 and was buried in Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland, O'Brien county, Iowa.[8] "Died Bedell - At her home in Grant township, on Sunday, July 18th, 1886, Mrs. Anna Bedell, wife of C Bedell, aged 65 years, 3 months and 18 days.
Deceased had been suffering for about two weeks, but was not considered dangerously ill until within a few days of her death. She was an estimable lady, loved and admired for her many womanly traits by a large circle of friends and neighbors.
The funeral services were held at her late home last Monday, and were conducted by Rev. Levi Jarvis, of Sutherland. A large number of the friends of the family attended the funeral, thereby showing their regard for the one who had been called to that unknown world. Deceased leaves a husband and a daughter, besides many warm friends, to mourn her loss. The remains were interred in the cemetery east of town.
Miss Libbie Bedell, of Omaha, arrived in town last Monday morning and was at once taken to her father's home in Grant township. She came in response to a telegram announcing the serious illness of her mother, but did not arrive until after her eyes had been closed in death."
Sutherland Courier 23 July 1886

After she died, Cornelius married Mary Jane Hoskins (1868-??) on 22 March 1887 at Holt, Nebraska.[9] She was the daughter of Thomas D. Hoskins (1832–1909) and Samantha Ann Wilson (1836–1876), who were married in 1854. This information on second marriage, which differs from Aunt June's Journal, was provided by another researcher, presented and explained on FamilySearch.org, which becomes plain when the 1880 and 1885 census info is examined.

They had a daughter, Nellie M (1887-1910), born yet that year, possibly in Omaha, or at least later resided there, but this may confusing her with her step-sister, Mary Lizzie Libbie Elizabeth's place of residence in 1886.

Cornelius went to live with his sister, Epheline and her son, Florentine, in Hardin county for the last year of his life.[10] He died of cancer of the throat and passed away on 1 August 1891 and was laid to rest in Cottage Cemetery, the same place that his sister and nephew were buried.[11][12] Cornelius and Florentine had a close relationship as demonstrated by Florentine closely following his uncle to Indiana and to Iowa, then working together for Harrison Stuckslager in Marion County for several years until Florentine took his family to Hardin County, Iowa.

"The parents of Ephaline Bedell Lake Warden were Zachariah Bedell, born 1788, who drowned in Erie Canal August 2, 1831 at age of 43 years and Margaret born 1791, who died Sept. 22, 1838 at age of 47 years.
Four children were born, namely;
Ephaline Bedell born in New Jersey.
Cornelius Bedell.
George Bedell.
Zachariah Bedell, Jr."
According to a Great-grand-daughter of Epheline, Elsie June Lake Neuenfeldt (1891-1995).[13]

Paraphrased from Aunt June's Journal, page 53:
"Cornelius Bedell, born 12 Aug 1814, was twice married. First wife's name was Ann, whose daughter from a previous marriage was named Lizzie. Ann was buried at O'Neal, Nebraska. Cornelius lived for a while in O'Brien county, Iowa. He spent his last years living with his nephew, Florentine Lake. He died of throat cancer on 1 August 1891 and was buried in Cottage Cemetery and has a gravestone there."[14]

Note that the information about his marriage to Lizzie is incorrect. Mary Lizzie Libbie Elizabeth Sayer was his step-daughter and Mary Jane Hoskins was his ward who he later married. by SEL 21Mar2022)
