Biography

Zebulon was born in 1825 in Harrison County, Virginia (in what is present day West Virginia). He was the son of Asa Bee and Hannah Maxson. His later childhood would have been on the family farm in Berea in Harrison County (in the area that would later become Ritchie County). In 1852 at the age of 27, he married Elizabeth Leggett in Ritchie County. They settled to farm in Ritchie County where they had three children together. Zebulon also did business as a cattle trader. Elizabeth died in 1875. Zebulon remarried three years later in 1878 to Harriet 'Hattie' Allen McGee in neighboring Doddridge County in what was now West Virginia. By 1880, the family had moved to farm in the Bolair area in Webster County. Zebulon and Hattie had one child together. Zebulon died of measles in 1900 in Webster County at the age of 75 in 1869. He is probably buried together with his second wife in Sand Run Baptist Church Cemetery in Bolair, West Virginia, but there is also apparently a burial record or gravestone in his name in Pine Grove Cemetery in Berea, West Virginia.

Research notes

Note that due to misleading information in the 1880 and 1940 censuses, (1) Ira H. Bee is sometimes listed as a son of Zebulon, but in fact he was his son-in-law, husband to Olive; and (2) Lester Bee is sometimes listed as another son of Zebulon, but he was Ira and Olive's son.

Zebulon was a name that appeared across several of the Seventh Day Baptist families in Harrison County, and it was the name used for Zebulon in all of his records. It is not clear why the different version of Jebulom was used on his gravestone in Bolair.
