Biography

Marie Beebe, daughter of Dr. Tabor Beebe (1791-1843), was born about 1821/1822 probably at Briar Creek Township, Columbia, Pennsylvania; for it is known that her father was a resident of this place in 1821, [1] later moving his family to Erie, Pennsylvia sometime prior to 1840. [2]

Maria Beebe, married on 29 Oct 1839 at the age of seventeen or eighteen, the gifted Casimir Gzowski, then 26, and who by the date of his marriage was educated as an engineer and attorney, had passed the bar exam, and was fluent in English, German, French and Italian. [3] The 1840 census reveals the newlywed couple to have been living in the household of her father in the 1840 census. [2] They were married for almost sixty years and had eight children, six of whom survived infancy.[4] Lady Gzowski was a prominent member of the National Council of Women of Canada, which was founded in 1893.[5] In 1906 she served as a vice-president of the Y.W.C.A. (Young Women's Christian Association) in Toronto.[6] She also held the office of First Directress of the Boys' Home Board from 1890 until her death.[7]

On or about 1890, her husband was knighted Sir Casimir Gzowski, K.M.C.G; A.D.C. an event which also bestowed upon her the title of Lady Marie (Beebe) Gzowski; the only surnamed Beebe known to have been granted that title. Lady Marie (Beebe) Gzowki died on 18 Feb 1908 at Toronto Canada, aged 95 years; [8] her body is interred in the Gzowski Family Vault at St. James Cemetery at Toronto, Toronto Municipality, Ontario, Canada.
