Joseph Beer was born in Bridford, Devon about 1793.^[1]

The 1841 census lists Joseph Beer as 45 years old, living at Week Barton, Bridford, Devon with his wife Elizabeth (40) and children Jonas (13), Sarah (9), and Ellin (6). Living with them are Miriam Addems (13), Robert Carsley (20), William Sercombe (14), Richard Knapman (13), and Sarah Splatt (20).^[2]

The 1851 census lists Joseph Beer, aged 48, as a farmer of 200 acres employing 3 labourers. He is the head of the household, living with his wife Elizabeth (52) at Bridford, Devon. Also in the household are his daughter Ellen (16), and son Jonas (22) and Jonas' wife Elizabeth (19) and their son William Tuckett (1). He employs a house servant Susan Knapman (19), and farm labourer George White (39).^[1]
