The parents of Philena Beer, James Beer and Rebecca Stickler, married on April 02, 1829 in Miami County, Ohio. Their marriage license showed David Beer as witness, however, can find no evidence of a relative by that name.[1] Their children were born in Ohio between 1830 and 1853. Philena was born about 1842 and she was the sixth of ten children born to her parents.[2] on April 25th.[3]
When Filena was seven she lived with her family on a farm valued at $500. The farm was located in Clay, Auglaize County, Ohio. Her father, James, then 42 was born about 1808 in Virginia. Filena's mother, Rebecca aged 40, was born about 1810 in Pennsylvania.[2]
Philena married John W.S. Cooley on November 7, 1859 in Appanoose County, Iowa [4] John was born about 1838 in Indiana where his family lived until about 1841. He was the son of a farmer, Lewis Cooley, who married Mary Maxson at age 19 when he was 21. John's parents were married about a year before he was born and they had another five children in the next eighteen years. As the oldest he was the first to marry and start his own household.
When Philena was 18 she was enumerated In Pleasant Township, Appanoose County, Iowa as Polina Cooley and her husband as J W S Cooley. He was 22 and was born about 1838 in Indiana. J W S was a farmer and he had personal property of $50. Philena lived next door to her father-in-law's farm valued at $1500. J W S probably worked the farm with his father, Lewis, whose household included his wife (John's mother), Mary, and four other children ages five to eighteen. The two youngest were born in Iowa and the older ones, like John, were born in Indiana.[5] John and Philena had two children: George D born about November 1860 and James W born about 1863. Both children were enumerated with their mother on the 1870 Census.
On September 30, 1862, the 26th Iowa Infantry mustered out for three years service. Philena's husband, John was in company A of that regiment which was part of the 3rd brigade, 1st division, XV Corp (Union Army) serving in the Army of Tennessee under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Details of John's military records are located on his profile.
When John left home to fight in the war, he left behind a wife who was expecting and a son. It is not known whether he new his wife was pregnant. Could his second child have been born before he left September 30, 1862 just two years after the birth of his first child? Possibly. If not, could he have known his wife was expecting another child when he left about seven months before the baby's birth. Maybe, but not likely.
Philena's first husband, Corp John Wilson Smith Cooley died at Milliken's Bend, Louisiana on May 2, 1863.[6] John may have been sick for more than a month before his passing since the Union commander, Grant, had left the area in late March and didn't return for a couple of months after John passed away.
Philena, the widow of John W S Cooley, married second to George Delay on August 30, 1868 in Appanoose County, Iowa.[7] Philena's boys would have been about 8 and 5. George had a daughter, Martha Jennie “Jennie” Delay Fuller by his first wife, Eliza Jane Buck Delay. After his wife passed away November 1, 1865, his Jennie, was raised by her maternal grandparents, John Buck and Elizabeth Ervin.[8] When Martha was 2 her father enlisted to serve in the United States Civil War in the 36th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He enlisted October 11, 1862 and mustered out March 20, 1863 when Martha was 3.[9][10] Five years later when George married second she was 8, The same age as his wife's oldest boy.
It was August 20, 1870 in Franklin Township, Appanoose County, Iowa when the George DELAY family was enumerated with three adults who were born in Ohio and the two COOLEY boys who were born in Iowa. George was 34 and a farmer with $1,223. of personal property. Philena and her brother, Joseph Beer, were the other two adults of the household. Joseph was 17 and enumerated as a farm laborer. Nobody in the DELAY household listed having foreign born parents.[11]
The George DELAY household was reduced by two in the last decade. In the late 1870s Filena's brother, Joseph was now head of his own household being married with one, Moses. Filena's oldest son, George at 19 may have been a servant in the James M POWERs household. That left just Filena and her son, James COOLEY left in George's household. George was listed as a farmer who had been unemployed for the last 12 months.[12]
The 1885 Iowa State Census reveals that the George DELAY household resided in Township 67 Range 19 Section 11 SWSW. His household still included Filena and James. It is possible that George and Filena have lived in the same home in Appanoose County where they were married almost twenty years earlier.[13]
Last time George was mentioned he was 19 and a living in Iowa as a servant. At 25 he was getting married in Caldwell, Missouri to Minnie B. De Long on November 24, 1885.[14]
Ten years later the entire family was living in Ninnescah Township, Reno, Kansas. The G. D. Cooley household was listed first on the Kansas State Census, 1895. G D was 34; his wife, M B was 28 and born in Indiana; their oldest children were born in Missouri, M F 8 and A E 6; the younger children were born in Kansas, L B 4 and J A 1. The next family enumerated on that census was G D's brother, J W who was 30 and his wife, 19 year old female, R E, and his parents, G 58 and F 52. It is not known when Filena and her family moved to Kansas, however, G W's family moved there about 1890 based upon the locations of his children's births.[15]
Both households are still living in Reno County, Kansas. George D was a farmer living on a rented farm and filed farm schedule 47. He and his wife, Minnie B had six children: Martin F born September 1886, Anna E in September 1888, Lulu B born during October 1891, John R born December 1893, Hobart M in July 1896 and Mary E during July 1899. The household of George Delay was on the previous census page and included his wife, Filena, and his step-son, James W Cooley who is now widowed. His FINDAGrave memorial shows that in 1896 his first wife, Rhoda E Ayers Cooley, passed away at age 20 years, 3 months and 16 days. A few weeks later their son, Morse L, passed away. He was born the previous year. Filena's husband and both sons are farmers working the farm that George owned with a mortgage. George filed farm schedule 36. [16]
Philena and her husband, George are now living on the farm owned free of mortgage by their youngest son, James. There are three other COOLEY's living there: M L, an adult female of 21; J L, a male age 2; and a 3 month female infant, not yet named. M L is his second wife, Maud Leota Smith; J L is J Lawrence and their unnamed daughter is Ester.[17]
James passed away June 15, 1907 in Reno County, Kansas, the same county where he was buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. This was also the same cemetery his first wife, Rhoda E. was buried. James and Rhoda had lost another child earlier that year. The infant boy named Fred only lived two days. At age 43, James had lost a wife and two sons. Only his second wife, a son, J Lawrence, and a daughter, Ester, survived him. They were all listed on the next census in the household of Arthur F BAILY, Maud's second husband. They married in either 1909 or 1910. Arthur was born in Virginia as were his parents. He is employed as a farmer and completed farm schedule 180. Arthur and Maud were still living in Haven, Kansas located in Reno County..
Not far away from the BAILY household lived the DELAYs. George and Filena had been married for forty-nine years. It was the second marriage for both of them. During their first marriages, George's wife had a daughter and Filena had two sons. Her husband, George, was retired and they were living on accrued income in a house that George owned. The United State Census of 1910 lists that Filena had five children and only four are living. However earlier records only reveal 2 children one of which was living when that census was taken.[18]
George passed away February 14, 1919. His widow, Philena Delay received his "Army Invalid" pension from the United States Veterans Administration.[9][10] His marker Shows his death in 1918 as does his Memorial on FindAGrave.[19]
When the census was taken the following year Philena Delay, at 77, was living alone on Sedgwick Ave in Haven, Kansas. She owned her home free of mortgage.[20]
Philena passed away December 19, 1921 at age 79 in Haven, Reno County, Kansas. She was buried by her second husband in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.[3][19]
