Biography

Devon flag
William Beer was born in Devon, England.

William was born on 19 May 1828. [1]

William was baptised on 22 September 1828 at Tedburn-St Mary, Devon, England on the same date as his brother Nathaniel. [2]

According to the 1941 census William was the 13 year old son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Beer, living with his 6 year old brother John Beer. [3]

The 1851 census lists William as a 22 year old married carpenter living in his parents’ home with them and his wife Charlotte (20) at Tedburn St Mary, Devon (St Thomas). His birth is given as about 1829 in Tedburn, Devon. [4] Also living in the house are his brother John (15, carpenter), cousin Harriet Perryman Preston (13) and daughter Emily (0). [5]

The 1861 census lists William and a 37 year old railway booking porter living in Curry Rivell, Somersetshire with his wife Charlotte and children Alice, Arthur Wills and Herbert John. His sister-in-law (Charlotte's sister) Harriett Parkin (29) is living with them together with her 2 children Frances Parking (2) and new born Henry William Parking. [6] I assume that Harriett moved in with her sister after the birth of her child so there would be assistance with her own 2 year old daughter and the new born baby at that time. These two were born in Eastend, Devon. It appears that his daughter Emily is living with her paternal grandparents in Tedburn St Mary, Devon. [7]

The 1871 census lists William Beer as a 41 year old Railway Agent, head of the household living in Aller, Somersetshire, England. His birthplace is given as Tedburn St Mary Tavy, Devon about 1830. He is living with his wife Charlotte (39, born Dunsford, Devon) and children: Alice Lavinia Beer (16, born Yeovil), Arthur Wills Beer (14, born Yeovil), Herbert John Beer ( 12, born Curry Rivel, Somerset), Ernest Beer (6, born Huish Episcopi, Somerset) and Ellen E Beer (0, born Aller, Somerset) [8]

According to the 1881 Census William was a 52 year old innkeeper (born at Tedburn St Mary, Devon, England) living at Whitestone, Devon, England with his wife Charlotte (49, born at Dunsford, Devon, England) and daughters Ellen (10, born at Aller, Somerset, England) and Beatrice (7, born at Aller, Somerset, England). [Reg no RG11; Piece/folio 2145/67].

Death registered in Sept Q 1891. [9]
