John Beer (son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth Beer) was baptised on 26 September 1834. His father Nathaniel is listed as a carpenter. [1]
According to the 1841 census John (6) was living at Beera Cottage with his brother William (10) and parents Nathaniel and Elizabeth.
The 1851 census lists John (15) as a carpenter living with his parents in Tedburn St Mary, Devon. Also living with him is his cousin Harriett Perryman Preston (13) and his niece Emily (0). [2] Also living there are his brother William and sister in law Charlotte. [3]
The 1861 census lists John Beer as the unmarried 25 year old son of farmer Nathaniel and Elizabeth Beer, living at Little Leigh, Crediton, Devonshire, England. It states he was born in Tedburn St Mary, Devon about 1836. Living in the household are his parents Elizabeth and Nathaniel together with Nathaniel's granddaughter Emily Beer aged 9 and 2 servants Samuel and Emma Harris (possibly brother and sister as their ages are 18 and 14). October 1865 - John Beer the landlord’s son was summoned for fathering Maria Andrews son - he was ordered to pay £2 and 1s 6d per week.
October 1867 - PC Thomas Densham was patrolling the beat out to the Cowley Bridge Inn. PC Short was also on patrol in the area when he called in on Nathaniel Beer, landlord of the Cowley Bridge Inn where he found PC Densham inside playing cards, when he should have been on his beat. Beer was summoned for harbouring the policeman while PC Densham failed to appear for the case, leaving Beer to pay 10s fine and expenses.
In the 1871 census John Beer (34) is living with his parents (his father Nathaniel is now an innkeeper) and also with his 20 year old niece Emily. [5]
January 1873 - An inquest into the death of John Wreford of Barton-place farm was held at the inn. Wreford had killed himself with a double barrelled shotgun.
John Beer died on 8 March 1890 in Exeter. He was innkeeper of the Cowley Bridge Inn. His probate was proven on 12 May 1890 to the value of £553 s0 d8 by his executors Mary Ann Beer (his widow) and Robert Phillips.[6]
April 1890 - Mrs Beer had her late husband’s license transferred to her.
