"Obituary." The Wingham Chronicle and Manning River Observer (NSW : 1898 - 1954) 6 April 1939:
MR. EDWARD CAMPBELL BEGBIE. Widespread regret was felt throughout the Manning district when the news passed round that Mr. Edward Campbell Begbie, of Taree Estate, had passed away at 7.30 on Sunday morning, aged 64 years. Deceased was a son of Mr. Alfred Daniel Campbell Begbie and Mrs. Begbie, both of whom have passed away.
The late Mr. Alfred Begbie (father) was born in India. In the early days he, came to the Upper Manning and for a time lived at Kimbriki. Later on he returned to India, where he purchased a tea plantation. Selling out there, he returned to Sydney and entered the services of a bank, from which he retired. He died at the age of 96. The late Mr. Edward Begbie'e mother was a direct descendant of Joseph Holt, whose memoirs the Mitchell Library recently purchased.
Deceased (the subject of the notice) was educated at Sydney Grammar School, and also spent one year at the Sydney University, from which he proceeded to Hawkesbury College, where he obtained his diploma iu butter-making. He then proceeded to Queensland as inspector for Nestle's condensed milk factory. He spent three years in Queensland.
Leaving that State, he purchased a property at Nowia, from which place he enlisted when war broke out.
He served throughout the war and returned to Australia ou the first boat after the signing of the Armistice, with the rank of sergeant in the Army Veterinary Corps. Just before leaving England he bad been granted long service leave. Good fortune stuck to him during the war, for he was never wounded.
Arriving in Australia he had a well-earned rest for a time and then came to the Manning and purchased the farm on Taree Estate on which he lived until he died.
He was married on the 21st April, 1921, to Miss Amelia Hildred Ellis, daughter of Mrs Ellis and the late Mr. W. J. Ellis, of Tinonee.
He was a very progressive farmer, his training at Hawkesbury College standing him in good stead in this respect. He took an active part in civic affairs in the community in which be lived. He was also deeply interested in politics and international affairs. Locally, he was an active member of the Taree branch of the Country Party. He was a man with a charming personality, and made friends quickly, to keep them.
About the 1st of September ot last year he became ill, and spent a good while under treatment in Mayo Private Hos-pital, Taree. During December last he went to Sydney to consult a specialist and returned little improved. During this year he gradually became worse, and was confined to his home, where he was lovingly tended by his devoted wife.
He is survived by a widow and three children: Hildred (aged 17), Muriel (12) and William (9). Three brothers survive: Messrs. P. C. Begbie and A. V. Begbie (of Sydney), and Mr. Spencer (Glen Innes), who is a brother-in-law, attended the funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon, after service in Tinonee Church, at the Tinonee Cemetery, where Rev. L. Ayscough officiated at the church and graveside.
