LAUNCH CAPSIZES; 5 LOST.

NEW-YORKER DROWNED GOING TO LAKE ERIE YACHT RACES.

Cleveland, Sept. 4. -- Five men were drowned in Lake Erie last night as the result of the capsizing of a twenty-two foot naphtha launch in which they were going from Cleveland to Vermillion to attend the yacht races at the latter place today. The dead are: JOHN D. BEGLEY. ALBERT G. TREIBER. PAUL HARTNER, all employes of the Cuyahoga Abstract Company. MAX HURTIG, a travelling salesman for a New York firm. JULES HURTIG, his brother, a draughtsman employed by the Gary Iron and Steel Company of this city. The first that was known of the drownings was when the launch floated to the beach near Edgewater Park late last night. Cries for help had been heard by campers along the shore, but no assistance could be given in the darkness. The launch is believed to have been caught in a trough of the sea, a heavy wind prevailing during the night. When the boat was found it was stripped of everything that could serve as a buoy for the occupants, and there was hope that some of the party might have remained afloat, but today's developments indicate that all went down to death. The body of BEGLEY was found on the beach this afternoon.
