Biography

Henry was born about 1756.

A previous version of this profile claimed, without source, that he was the son of Thomas Begley and Nancy Cox.

Another researcher (p 8) claims he was the son of Henry Begley and Elizabeth Cook.

The current (June 2023) version of this profile claims, without source, that he married Margaret Esther Sizemore, sister of Winnie Sizemore who married Henry's brother William.

In 1850, one Margaret Begley was enumerated in the Perry, KY in the household of William Begley-30 and his wife Winnie Sizemore.[1]

However, another researcher records that he married "Darby" (maiden name unknown, Sizemore by tradition). This marriage is supported by a land deed dated 9 Sept 1817 in Clay Co., Kentucky:

Land Deed, Book A, pp. 1990-191, Clay County, Kentucky, Henry Begley and wife, Darby Begley transfer 50 acres on the Red Bird Fork of the Kentucky River to Messenger Lewis. On 9 Sept 1817. Book A, p. 190-191. Signed Henry Begley and Darby Begley. Witnessed Henry Begley, John, Polly Begley. https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSKN-192L-R

A previous version of this profile claimed that he died 19 March 1846; while not sourced, there is a genealogy of the Begley family (p 8) that also claims this death date -- without a source. (The man that died of dropsy in Nov 1849 in Marshall Co., Tennessee is a different man.[2])

Research Notes

There is potential for conflation in this profile. There were many Henry Begleys. Internet trees show a typo somewhere with the dob. Dates of both 4 Mar 1756 and 4 Mar 1765 are seen. Documentation to establish where date originates and which is correct has not been presented. There are also arguments that the mortality schedule for Henry C. Begley is actually for a different Henry. Where the original date of 19 Jun 1846 came from needs to be found as there may be probate records that do support it somewhere. 85 years old in 1849 would be a ca 1764 dob. UPDATE: see notes below. The man in Marshall County, Tennessee is a different man, Henry C Bagley, whose wife was named Nancy.

Are Darby and Margaret Sizemore the same person and how do we know that? Sons John and Henry are in Ark. ca. 1838. Why didn't their parents go with them to have help from younger family members? Margaret Begley of 1850 could be a spinster sister of Wm and Henry.

Where are precise dates coming from?

Caution: Unusual information. Is the following correct? A child's birth and death date (Begley-79 born 4 Mar 1756 died 19 Jun 1846) should not be before a parent was 13 years old (mother Piersall-21 born 1744). Attached mother also differs from woman named in bio. Marked uncertain.

1790 census: Chatham, NC[3]
1800 census: Hillsborough, Chatham, NC[4]
1810 census: Clay Co, KY[5]
1820 census: Clay Co, KY (notice this says Henry JUNIOR)
1830 census: Morgan, TN[6]

The Marshall County, Tennessee references are for a different man, Henry C. BAGLEY (not Begley). He also left a Will in Marshall Co written in 1847 naming his wife, Nancy and daughters, granddaughters and slaves.

1840 census: Marshall, Tennessee.[7].
Will of Marshall Co man, not Begley79[8]
1850 mortality schedule: died at Dist. 4, Marshall, TN. was aged 85, a carpenter, died of dropsy, died November 1849.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

Begley-567 and Begley-79 appear to represent the same person because: Exact duplicate

PLEASE merge Begley-79 with Begley-567

Same man, same wife. I researched all the details and added all the sources for census, death, etc.

I descend from Henry's son, Henry b. 1800. Henry's (1756) wife's name has been reported, without sourcing, to be Darby Sizemore. I am seeing DNA matches to my aunt (gedmatch kit EP4568211) from people who have the Sizemore's in their line, but not necessarily the Begleys. So I believe we are descendants of the Sizemores some way. Would appreciate input from anyone that can help us find our place with the Sizemore line. My aunt seems to have some unique segments that many of the rest of us didn't get.

I have not included Begley-79 spouse, because I could not provide documentation or sources. The Begley's are definitely connected to the Sizemores.
