Biography

Edmund Belcher[1] was born in 1725, in Amelia, Virginia,[2] and resided in Virginia[3][4] In 1782 he resided in Charlotte County, Virginia[5]

Edmund served as a Private during the Revolutionary War.[6] DAR Ancestor #: A008595.

His death date is difficult to pin down.

  • DAR reports after 1782.
  • recorded at the Charlotte County Court House:
"Parties: Edmund Belcher of Charlotte County to Beverly Belcher of Charlotte. Consideration: Good will and affection that he hath for his son Beverly, and five shillings. Personal property for life and at death to be divided between himself and his brothers Obey, Samuel and sister Polly. Recorded: 2 January 1797."[7]

Research Notes

1) There is a bit of circular source citation here: The only source cited for Edmund Belcher on the Family Search site is "Edmund Belcher on WikiTree." And yet that is one of our sources here!
2) You may have noticed that both his mother and wife have the same Last Name At Birth. It's possible that it is not scandalous, but this researcher has not seen the documentation for those names. In fact many trees list Edmund's spouse as "Mary (Shannon?) _______." As noted above, the DAR Ancestor record lists his wife as "Mary X." If you have documentation please cite it on the Gooding profile(s) and edit out this comment. Thanks.
