Research Notes: Susan's father is noted as Starling V. Belcher and some records. The 1750 U. S. Census lists him as James V. Belcher and Susan's death record lists him as William Belcher, so more documentation is needed.

Biography

Susan was born on February 11, 1849 in Chambers County, Alabama. [1] Her father was Starling V. Belcher and Amanda A. Rambo Belcher.

In the 1850 U. S. Census (30 November 1850), [2] the family lived in Chambers County, Alabama. Her father is listed as James V. Belcher a thirty-two year old farmer. Her mother was Amanda. Susan was one year old and had four siblings.

In the 1860 U. S. Census (20 July 1860), [3] they were still in Chambers County with the Beula post office. In addition to Starling and Amanda the children included: Collins age 19, Starling V. age 15, James B. age 12, Susan E. age 9, William J. age 7, Barney J. age 5, and Melitta A. age 1.

Starling had survived his service as a private in the Confederate States Army but died sometime between the birth of his last child in 1865 and the 1870 U. S. Census. "Starling V. Belcher died between 1865-1870. He was murdered while crossing the bridge at Milltown and robbed of a large amount of money he had won in a poker game. (Source-Margie Belcher Berry, granddaughter.)" [4]

Susan Elizabeth Belcher married Benjamin Bishop on July 4, 1871 in Chambers County, Alabama. [5]

In the 1880 U. S. Census (16 June 1880), [6] the family remained in Milltown. Benjamin is listed by his middle name (Henry) and was still farming. Susan Bishop was thirty-three years old and keeping house. The family included Matilda age 8, John age 6, William age 4, Lidia age 3, Laura age 2 and Ben H. age six months.

A son, Barnie Vinson Bishop, was born in 1883 and died in 1884. [7]

In the 1900 U. S. Census (June 8, 1900) [8] the family remained in Chambers County, Alabama. Benjamin was listed as B. H. Bishop was farming on a rented farm. Susie Bishop had been married twenty seven years and was the mother of fourteen children with thirteen living in 1900. The children at home included George Henry age 20, Minnie age 18, Albert age 14, Walter age 12, Carrie age 10, Ewell age 9, Royal age 7 and Eddie age 2. The older children were attending school.

Between 1900 and 1910 the family moved to Bell County, Texas. In the 1910 U. S. Census (13 April 1910), [9] Benjamin and Susan had been married thirty-nine years and lived in Justice Precinct 7, Bell County, Texas. Benjamin was listed as Ben H. and was working as a farmer, engaged in general farming. He was working on his own account on a rented farm. Susan was listed as Susie E and the number of children from the prior census had not changed. The children at home included Ewell J. age 19, Royal age 16 and Eddie age 12. All three children were listed as farm laborers on the family farm. Royal and Eddie had attended school.

In the 1920 U. S. Census (6 January 1920) [10] the family was in Killeen, Bell County, Texas. Benjamin (Henry B) was sixty nine years old and owned his home free of a mortgage. Susie B. was seventy years old. No employment was listed and it does not indicate if it was a farm or single house. It was located "South of RR". No children are listed with the couple.

Benjamin passed away on October 26, 1929 in Killeen. His death was reported by his son, C. W. Bishop (Clarence William) of Killeen. [11]

In the 1930 U. S. Census (7 April 1930) [12] Susie Bishop lived in Killeen in a home (not farm) valued at $1200 which was owned. The only other person in the home was a forty-five year old divorced housekeeper.

She passed away on July 1, 1936 in Killeen. [13] The informant on her death certificate was the same son who was given on Benjamin's death certificate. She was buried next to her husband in the Killeen City Cemetery on July 2, 1936. They are in plot: OS B 26. [14]
