Unidentified Newsclipping - 1887 BELDING.--Died in Poultney, Vt., October 18, 1887, the Hon. Samuel Belding, of Johnson, aged 80 years and 6 days. He was born in Swanzey. He was an active business man, as well as one of large public spirit. When but nineteen he became proprietor of a store in his native town. A few years later he engaged extensively in manufacturing cotton. In 1844 he removed to Vermont, and for many years was a prominent and successful merchant. Twice was he a member of the Lesgislature. Later he was County Commissioner and Judge of Probate. He was also President of the Board of Trustees of the State Normal School. Mr. Belding never forgot his religious obligations. Converted when 27, he became a loyal and active member of the Methodist Episcopal church, in whose communion he thenceforth lived. His house was the preacher's house, and many will remember his cordial welcome and delightful Christian conversation. He was thoroughly consecrated to the service of the Highest, and gave largely of his time and means for the prosperity of the church. Mr. Belding was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a trustworthy friend. He leaves a widow and five children: D. S. Belding, Swanzey, New Hampshire; Mrs. Professor C. H. Dunton, of Troy Conference Academy, Poultney, Vermont; Mrs. A. H. Eaton, Berlin, New York; and the Misses Lucia and Laura Belding, both employed in Troy Conference Academy. The Rev. C. A. S. Heath officiated at the funeral, which occurred at the house of Professor Dunton, where the deceased spent his last two years. (bio by: Mary Jane Haight-Eckert)
