Everyone called Tennessee Ellen Belew "Tennie," and that is the name engraved on her headstone. Born in 1858 in Denton County, Texas, she was a child of Dick Belew and Mary Belew (Both parents were Belews.)[1][2]Tennie was a toddler when her parents moved from Tennessee, hence the name. [3] Tennie was very proud of her Native American heritage, particularly that of her grandmother, Mary Polly Bryant, whose tribute stands in Poplar Springs Cemetery, Gibson County, TN. [4]
On 19 Nov 1878, Tennie married J.C. Arnett, in Denton, TX. They had four children:
A colorful account of Tennie’s life with J.C. Arnett can be found in the profile of her husband James Cavett Arnett. She rode herd with him on the range day and night and lived in a house on the prairie.[5] Their children were born in Oklahoma’s Indian Territory, [6] and they finally settled in Luther, Oklahoma, to live out their days.
Tennie and J.C. both died in 1938, and are buried in Luther Cemetery, Luther, OK.[7]
