Biography

Robert Belknap[1] was born about or before 1330, possibly in Kent or Wiltshire, England, the son of John Belknap and his wife Alice.

Family 1

  • Amy (possibly daughter of William de Say, knight), who died before 1373[2]

Family 2

  • Juliana Darset[3] (died 1414), daughter of John Darset (or Darsett/Dorsett) and Elizabeth Phelipp, daughter of Thomas Phelipp of Baldock, Hertfordshire. [4]

Children

  • Thomas Belknap (died before 1414)
  • John Belknap (died before 1414)
  • Joan or Joanna Belknap (died before 1419), married (1) Ralph de Stonor (died 13 November 1394 accompanying King Richard II of England while en route to Ireland) and (2) Sir Edmund Hampden (died before 29 April 1420), Sheriff and Escheator of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire
  • Sir Hamon Belknap (died before 18 March 1428/1429), Treasurer of Normandy, married Joan Boteler, daughter of Thomas Boteler, 4th Baron Sudeley.
  • Juliana Belknap (died after 1417), married (1) Robert de Avenel and (2) Nicholas Kymbell

Robert Belknap is the great grandfather of Sir Edward Belknap, Privy Councillor to Henry VII and Henry VIII, through Sir Hamon Belknap's son Sir Henry Belknap (died 20 June 1488).

He served as Chief Justice of the Court of Common Pleas of England commencing in 1377 until his banishment to Ireland in 1388 by King Richard II.

On June 2, 1381, the chief justice of the common pleas, Sir Robert Belknap, arrived in Brentwood to summon jurors to indict the rebels (the Peasant's Revolt). However, the commons refused and made him take an oath not to attempt such a task again[5][6]

Sir Robert born c1330 in England (no source gives a definitive location) and died 19.1.1401 buried in Rochester Cathedral, he married his first wife Amy in c1365 who was living in 1369 but died that year and he married Juliana/Sybil in c1369 (some primary sources give a possible first name as Sybil).

Their children were born between 1369 and c1380/9 the chronological order appears to be, Thomas born 1369, Juliana born 1370, Joanna born c1374, Robert born c1375 - c1379, Hamon born c1380 - c1389 died 4.1.1429, the birth dates for Robert/Hamon vary in the primary sources. It would appear all the children were born in Kent, England and there is no consensus on the death dates of the first four children.

He could not have had a daughter born when he was 87 and 61 years after the birth of her sister Joanna. Whatever issue is causing you to make these kinds of mistakes, please fix it.
