Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
George Bell was a Virginia colonist.

George Bell, son of Thomas Bell and Mary (Neale) Bell, was born about 1653 in Northampton County. He passed away about 1723 in Accomack County, Virginia.

George is named in the will of his father, Thomas Bell, dated 6 July 1678 and proved 10 December 1678 at Northampton County. Apparently he and his father had issues. Thomas' will states: "To my son George Bell one shilling and I hereby disinherit him from any part of my land." Although George apparently was included with his siblings in the distribution of his father's cattle.[1]

In Colonial Families of the United States of America, the descendants of Sir Robert Bell of Norfolk, England, are given. In that lineage, Thomas Bell, married Mary Neal, is listed. His issue is given as:

  1. Thomas, of whom later.
  2. William, of Bell Haven, Virginia.
  3. Robert, d. April, 1709; m. Tabitha Scarborough.
  4. Anthony, m. Abigail Roach of Somerset County, Maryland.
  5. George, d. October, 1723; m. Hannah Brickhouse.
  6. Mary, m. ----- Maddox.
  7. Elizabeth, m. Thomas Geggings.[2]

This George Bell is not the son of Richard Bell. Richard's wife Sarah was too old to have a child in 1653. In addition, Richard and Sarah lived in Isle of Wight County in the 1650s, not Northampton County. George is being removed from Richard and Sarah and attached to Thomas Bell and Mary (Neale) Bell as son based on records included above in this profile.
