MR. JOHN BELL
The death took place at a private hospital in Dubbo on Thursday evening of Mr. John Bell, of 'Waratah' Brisbane Street, an old and esteemed resident of the district.
Born at Dalton, Dumfreshire (Scotland) 81 years ago, deceased came to Australia when aged 20, and for 10 years lived with an uncle in Victoria. Later, he entered into farming pursuits in the Riverina, but 49 years ago settled at 'Langley Dale,' in the Dubbo district. There he remained for 31 years, retiring in 1920 to make his home at Dubbo.
The late Mr. Bell took a prominent part in Freemasonry, was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, a past chief of the Dubbo Caledonian Society, and a member of the Dubbo Cemetery Trust.
While in the Riverina Mr. Bell married at Deniliquin Miss Betsy Byers, who predeceased him in 1900. Of that union there were two sons and three daughters, their names being Louisa (Mrs. R. Greig, Dubbo), Betsy (Mrs. Stockings, Victoria), John George (Gilgandra) , Margaret (Mrs. A. West, Dubbo), and Robert (Dubbo).
In later years he married again, his wife being Miss Euphemia Kyle Mc Donald, whose demise was reported last year. There was no issue of that union.
Three brothers— Peter, Robert and James— were associated with him years ago, but all have since passed away. A sister (Mrs. McAdam) lives in Canada.
Before the funeral yesterday at 4.30 p.m. there was a service at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. D. Forshaw Almond, in the absence of the Rev. E. H. Vines. The remains were laid to rest in the Presbyterian portion of the Dubbo cemetery, the Rev. Almond conducting the obsequies. Pall-bearers were Messrs. John and Robert Bell (sons), and A. West and R. Greig (sons-in-law).
The funeral was largely attended, a number of Masonic brethren being among the mourners. The Masonic service was recited by Wor. Bro. W Ley.
C. J. Shakespeare & Sons had charge of the mortuary arrangements. [3]
