Biography

Calvin was born in Ohio in 1835, the son of Isaac Bell and Elizabeth Mitchell. His family was based in Harrison County, Virginia (today West Virginia) where Calvin likely grew up (so it is not clear why he would have been born in Ohio). In 1857 at age 22, he married Harriet Amanda Hoff in Harrison County. They settled to farm in neighbouring Doddridge County. They had two children together before Harriet died there of diptheria in 1860 at only 19 years old. Calvin remarried a year later in 1861 to Martha Adams. They continued to live in Doddridge County, having 13 more children together. Calvin may also have served in the Civil War as a private in Co. B of the 15th West Virginia Infantry, though he have been sent home sick after only a month. In the late 1890s, Calvin moved with the family to Milton township in Marion County, Kansas, where he did shoemaking and had a shop. He died in Burns, Kansas in 1916 and his buried there with his second wife in Burn Cemetery.

Note that Calvin did not report himself as a veteran in the 1910 census, either because the Civil War record for Calvin S. Bell refers to a different person or because he was in the Army so briefly, having been sent home sick after only a month, that he didn't consider himself a bonafide veteran.
