Biography

Joseph Bell was the father of James Bell (abt.1812-1896). ^[1]

He may be one of the two Joseph Bells from the 1831 census for Annaghmore, Magherafelt.

He passed away 10 August 1857 age 85 and is buried at Church Cemetery, Castledawson, near his descendants. His wife may have been Mary. ^[2]

We are trusting the DiscoverEverAfter headstone transcription that it actually says 10 August 1857 age 85; it is not clear from the photo.

Children

As there were two Josephs in the census, it's not clear that all of the linked children were siblings, i.e. which of them were children of this headstone. There seems to be an age difference between John and Robert so perhaps they are not siblings.

The name of Joseph Bell occurs three times at Annaghmore in Griffith's Valuation. Since there is no disambiguator, this is probably three records for the same Joseph. It is possible it may be this profile with the valuation taken before he died; or perhaps it is the other one from the 1831 census.

There are two other death records for Joseph Bell of Annaghmore, both at the Magherafelt Workhouse:

• 31 Aug 1896, widower age 81/87, weaver.^[3]
• 26 Feb 1906, widower age 86, carpenter.^[4]

One of those would go with marriage 1848 Joseph Bell of Annaghmore, son of William Bell, to Jane Porter of Tubbermore. ^[5]

There is also 1854 marriage Joseph Bell of Annaghmore, son of Joseph Bell, tailor, to Anne Simpson of Drumlamph, dau of Robert Simpson. ^[6]

This Anne might be a sister of Eliza (Simpson) Bell (abt.1832-1908) who married a Bell of Annaghmore.

There is also another Joseph Bell on the headstone of Joseph Bell (abt.1850-), whose parents seem to be John and Euphemia. It could therefore be that Robert Bell (1830-1915)'s father was one of the above two Josephs and not this profile.

There is an 1851 census search form ordered by Jane Bell c/o W. H. Maitland, Magherafelt, for her parents Joseph Bell + Mary Pickering of Aughrim, Artrea parish. Media . The return found married 1846 and children David, Fannie and Lizzie (but not Jane).
