Genevra Odell "Jennie" McGrath passed away on December 19, 2015 at her home surrounded by family. She was born on November 1, 1941 in Washington, DC. She was the daughter of Capt. Grady J. Bell, Jr. and Wanda Phillips Bell.
Jennie and her family moved from Greenville, NC to Cobb Island, MD in 1946. Jennie attended Glasva School and La Plata High School, volunteering at school activities. She attended college at the Richmond Professional Institute of Art, now VCU. She worked at the Maryland Independent Newspaper for 14 years. Jennie lived in the original house her father built shortly after moving to Cobb Island.
Jennie helped start the Cobb Island Citizens on Patrol/Neighborhood Crime Watch and was a dedicated volunteer for 16 years. She volunteered in the States Attorney Office. She received the 2011 Maryland Governor's Crime Prevention Award. She was an avid gardener and an active member of the Cobb Island Garden Club.
Jennie is predeceased by her parents, Capt. Grady J. Bell, Jr. and Wanda Phillips Bell. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Neil M. McGrath; son, Derrick DeHessa; daughters, Carrie McGrath (Bob Hanisco) and Gillian Potter; grandchildren, Alicia McLain (Matt Cumers) and Patrick McLain, Jr.; great granddaughter, Selah Mclain; brothers, Gregory Bell (Betty), Grady Bell III (Carla Krout); and a multitude of family and friends.
