John W. Bell was born on 4 March 1779 and baptized on 21 March 1779 in Rockland County, New York. He married Hannah Graham on 31 December 1805 as listed in the Dutch Reformed Church records. Both the groom and bride had residences in Tappan, New York at the time of his marriage. He resided in "Orangetown". Tappan was a part of Orangetown, New York. He was a farmer by trade. He lost his wife in 1836 and was living with his son, Tunis, 36, and daughter Eliza in the 1850 Census with real estate valued at $5,000, He died on 11 August 1851 and was buried in the Tappan Dutch Reformed Churchyard in Tappan, New York..
