Research Notes

Martha May "Mattie" Bell nearly always went by "Mattie" - per several Census Records, Marriage Record, grave marker, and obituary. Only the first two Census reports (1880 and 1885) list her as Martha (age 2 and age 6, probably due to her birthday in July). After that, she is always Mattie.

She has been confused with Jackson Monroe Modrell's second wife, Matilda Utisha Butts.

I can find no record of divorce for Mattie and Jackson, but the 1940 Census lists Mattie as single, living with Robert Shyrock (83) and Clara Shyrock (82) in Nampa, Idaho. However, her death certificate lists her as widowed.
