Zerne "Zernie" Bell was born about 1906[1] around La Rue, in the Town of Freedom, Sauk County, Wisconsin. He attended North Freedom High School in the late 1910s. On the morning of Friday, 17 Oct 1919, he was riding with Mr. F. E. Settergren, a Baraboo hardware merchant, who had just picked up two hundred pounds of dynamite. At some point south of North Freedom, in front of the property of Albert Bender, the car struck a farm culvert near a corner and flipped over. Zerne was killed when the vehicle flipped and the driver Mr. Settergren was bruised and had no broken bones. The dynamite did not explode.[2]
Zerne was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in North Freedom, Wisconsin.[1]
