Biography

Ireland Native
John Bell was born in Ireland.

John was born 20 May 1841. He was the son of Robert Bell and Peggy Jackson of Dunmore, Lissan, County Tyrone. [1]

On 19 Nov 1867 at the Parish Church of Kildress (Church of Ireland), he married Letitia Charles of Beltonean, daughter of William Charles, farmer. [2]

He passed away 18 Dec 1904 at Dunmore age 65, due to influenza, attended by neighbour Thomas James Bell. [3] [4]

He was buried at the family burial ground at Claggan. The chief mourners were sons Jackson Bell and Gilmore Bell B.A. , and John Charles (brother-in-law). [5]

Research Notes

Parents

Parents assigned based on him having a son Jackson and that would be his mother's maiden name. Furthermore, the 1904 death age of 65 places him quite close to the birth record of 1841.

It's conceivable the death age is wrong and he's the son of those parents' son Robert. But that seems less likely.

There were two Robert Bell of Dunmore in the 1827 Tithe Applotment Book. However, son Gilmore Bell has "Letitia Charles" as mother on his birth record, and Gilmore and Jackson are known to be brothers (see Gilmore's profile).

The funeral clipping lists about 30 attendees, probably about half of whom we have profiles for already, but they're not sorted by family relationship, so that's not very useful.

Census

1901 Ireland census is the right age for him - but no family listed. The Image has a big note "Missing Pages".

Will

Info from the will:

  • Son: Jackson Bell, bread server.
  • Executor: William Crooks jnr. of Dunmore, farmer.
  • His wife is still alive
  • Daughter: Sarah
  • Son: Robert Thomas.
  • Son: William James.
  • Son: Gilmore.
  • Witness: David Bell jnr. , Dunmore, farmer's son.
  • Witness: William Bell, Dunmore, postman.

Children

Possible children from civil registration (bearing in mind that there were two Robert Bells so possibly two John Bell son of Robert):

  • Sarah Elizabeth Bell (25 Nov 1868)
  • William Robert Bell (9 Jan 1870)
  • Joseph Charles Bell (24 Aug 1872)
  • Margaret Bell (2 Jan 1874)
  • Samuel Bell (29 Apr 1875)

"Jackson" is not mentioned here, maybe that is an alias or middle name?
