Biography

Frank Bellamy is Notable.

Francis Bellamy was an author who was best known for writing the original United States Pledge of Allegiance.[1]

Timeline

1855 Francis is born in Mount Morris, New York. He is found in the 1855 New York State Census with his parents.[2]

1860 The Bellamy family has moved to Rome, New York. The way the census listing is enumerated for this year, it appears that his family is in residence with two other families -- the George and Emma Osborn family, and the Levi and Ruba Farwell family.[3]

1864 His father passes away in October of this year.

1870 "Frank" is 15 years old and living with his widowed mother. They are still in Rome, New York.[4]

1875 He is a student at University of Rochester and is also listed in the household of his widowed mother. She has not remarried.[5]

1880 Francis is found living in Little Falls, Herkimer, New York in the household of Harvey and Margaret Schuyler at the time of this census. He lists his occupation as "clergyman."[6]

bef. 1882 Marries Harriet Benton.

1882 First son, John Benton Bellamy, is born on 20 Sep while living in Newark, Wayne County, New York.

1889 Second son, David Bellamy is born in October.

1892 The Pledge of Allegiance was published on 8 Sep.[1]

1894 Francis and Harriet are listed on the manifest of the ship Oluette. They are sailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Boston. Francis lists his occupation as "journalist."[7]

1896 Third son, Brewster Bellamy, is born on 17 Feb while living in Newton, Massachusetts. He dies two days later.

1900 Francis, Harriet and two sons -- John B and David are living in Yonkers, West Chester County, New York.[8]

1910 Francis and Harriet and the boys have moved to Manhattan.[9]

1913 Harriet passes away at the age of 61.

1915 The New York Census for this year shows Francis and his son David living in New York, New York. Since Harriet passed away in 1913, and their son John was married before this year, it's likely that Francis and David are the only two in the household.[10]

1920 At the time of the 1920 Census, Francis is found in Manhattan. He is widowed and listed as a lodger in the household of Edwin C and Kathryn W Parker.[11]

aft. 1920 Marries second wife, Marie Morin.

1922 In February of this year, Francis and Marie sailed home from Bermuda aboard the Fort Hamilton. He lists his residence as "244 Central Park W., New York, NY"[12]

1930 He has moved to Hillsborough, Florida with his wife, Marie. There is also a servant by the name of Rosa M. Williams living in their household.[13]

1931 Francis passes away while living in Tampa, Florida.[14]

Research Notes

  • His first marriage date is estimated and is set before the date of the birth of his son.
  • His second marriage date is estimated and is set after the death of his first wife.
  • His death record gives his middle initial as "M" and was reported by David Bellamy -- perhaps a grandson?? It also estimates his birth year as 1856; however, he was listed in the 1855 New York State census, so it must have been 1855.[14] -- Fiscus-32 15:53, 6 July 2018 (UTC)
  • It's interesting to note that in 1880, there is another "Frank" Bellamy living in Rome, New York. He is listed as black, and his occupation is "horse trainer." He was born ca. 1857 in New York. So, it will be important not to confuse the two men. -- Fiscus-32 19:05, 7 July 2018 (UTC)
