Eileen's Autobiography

I was born and raised in the Tucson Metro Area in Southern Arizona. My parents were both raised on farms. My mother lived in East Texas in Lindale while my father lived near the border of the Carolinas in a small town called Little River.

Prior to meeting each other my parents were divorcees. They got married 6 months before I was born. They were married in Northern California in June 1977.

I went to private schools K through 12. I received associate and bachelor degrees from Pima Community College and The University of Arizona.

I was born with respiratory issues which led to my diagnosis in 1979: chronic bronchial asthma. From 1977 to 1988, I was hospitalized often suffering from gastroenteritis and pneumonia. There were many visits to the emergency department at the Air Force Base hospital. I missed so much school due to this respiratory illness that I had to repeat a quarter or a full year (3rd grade).

During my adulthood, I moved around a lot. I was in Arizona until I was 29. I lived in Pennsylvania, California, and Oregon. I currently live in Rochester, Minnesota.

Originally pursuing a career in teaching, I stumbled upon another career path that was fascinating. I start doing home health for older adults in 2005. Currently, I'm a certified nursing assistant and I'm working on an associate's degree in Nursing at a local community college. Recently, I've became a trained medication aide in March 2022.

I continue to get treatment for asthma especially during the COVID pandemic. From 2020 to the present day, I continue to protect myself by wearing the personal protective equipment. I was face to face with the virus as I fed and cleaned a client with COVID-19. Despite many exposures, I've been tested negative many times. It's a miracle that I am still living!

My religious background has changed over the years. I was raised Baptist but I became a Roman Catholic in April 2004. I was confirmed with the name Lucia, received first communion and reconciliation.

I met my husband in 2015 in Portland, Oregon and we wed in Rochester, Minnesota in 2018. My father in law introduced me to WikiTree.

For about the past five years, I have been interested in learning about my roots. I guessed for awhile that I was 75% African and 25% European. I was pretty close! I knew that there was white or mixed raced ancestors on my paternal side. My father mentioned this to me and he wanted to know more. Sadly, he died in May 2015. Now, I'm looking for answers.

I'm a member of the organization called Coming to the Table [1] which addresses the racial wounds of the past including slavery and racial segregation. The goal is to heal from these wounds. I hope to be a part of the Linked Descendants Working Group [2] within the organization.

Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.

If you have decided to step away from your study, please reply to this comment to that effect.

Hi Azure,

You can remove me from the Gaston County page.

I personally want to do a one place study on Horry County, SC instead. I've mentioned in the survey.

Let me know your thoughts. Enjoy the Thon!

Hi, Eileen!

Thanks for responding and taking the survey!

The OPS Project doesn't manage county pages, like the one for Gaston County, North Carolina , those are usually managed by the project leader or coordinator for the state project.

Let me know if there is a place (building, street, community) within Horry County, South Carolina you'd like to have a place study created for it and I'll get it done!

Azure Rae
