Elizabeth (sometimes given as Jean) Bellenden married William Lauder in Cauldscheills, a Burgess of the Royal Burgh of Lauder, in 1564 and they had four known children. According to Lord Fountainhall she is a cadet of the Bellendens of Broughton.
She is one of the five known children of John Bellenden of Lasswade (living 1586). The eminent author and classicist William Bellenden is Elizabeth's brother.
Stewart Smith (1898) states that "William married Elizabeth or Jean Ballenden of Lasswade". Stewart Smith also records a petition to Greyfriars Church in Edinburgh dated June 18, 1719, regarding the Lauder burial vault, "Elizabeth Ballenden of Broughton wife of William Lauder of Lauder Tower" (which he never possessed) is quoted as being buried therein. Lord Fountainhall is quoted as saying "Andrew Lauder, my grandfather, his mother was Jean Ballanden, daughter to the Ballandens of Lasswade, who were descended of the Ballandens of Brughton."
