Enoch Bellis was the son of Thomas and Ellen Lamb Bellis, he was born in March 1871 at Buckley, near Chester, England. When he was about 10 years old, the family moved to Pennsylvania, where they settled. In his early youth he became interested in the coal mining industry in Pennsylvania, and engaged in active work in the mines. Later he was manager of a large company store, and finally the head of his own coal mining business.
He married Miss Perella Lovelace, of Burnside, Pennsylvania on 22 Jun 1898, and about 1917 they moved to Buckhannon, West Virginia, and this was where they have been prominently identified with the civic and church work of the town. Enoch Bellis was identified with every public-spirited organization of Buckhannon during his life here. He as past president of the Rotary Club, a member of Franklin Lodge No. 7 A.F. and A.M., treasurer of the Red Cross, treasurer and deacon of the Presbyterian Church and a member of the choir. At the time of his death, he was president and treasurer of the Berryburg Coal Company in Barbour County.
Enoch had became interested in oil exploration when the oil boom was starting in Oklahoma about 1909. He provided funds for his brother-in-law’s oil investments. He was the secretary for Springfield Oil and gas company in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He also funded Fifty-Five Oil and Gas Company in Muskogee of which his brother-in-law C. A. Lovelace Sr. was president. Enoch spent time traveling from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma until these oil investments proved to not be profitable.
He was survived by his wife, Perella Bellis, his sister-in-law, Gwen Lovelace, who has made her home with them: five sisters, Mrs. Nelson Ake, Hadden Heights, New Jersery, Mrs. George Hodgkinson, Orlando, Florida, Mrs. John Plyer, Brooksville, Pa; Mrs. Andrew McQuown, Mahaffey, Pa. Mrs. Edwin Kantz of Pontiac, Mich.: three daughters, Jane of Buckhannon, Kathryn of New York City, and Helen Brooks of Alarka, North Carolina. Enoch Bellis passed away on 25 May 1932.
ENOCH BELLIS, DIES LATE LAST NIGHT; ILL FIVE WEEKS ____ Succumbs to Heart Attack Was Active in Church Civic Activities ____ Following an illness of five weeks, Enoch Bellis, 62 passed away on 25 May 1932 at 10:15 o'clock at his home on Central Avenue. All the members of his family were with him when he died.
