Biography

Charles's parents were Thomas and Mary Bellwood as shown by his christening record at Fishlake, Yorkshire, and his Sykehouse residence at the time of his marriage.[1] In the census Charles consistently gives his birthplace as Sykehouse, a small village not even two miles from the hamlet of Fishlake in South Yorkshire. Sykehouse did not have a church until 1869, so vital records were recorded at St.Cuthbert's in Fishlake.

Charles's occupation is given in the census as farm laborer.

Charles and Ellen are buried in Morley Cemetery, Morley, Yorkshire.

1851 - Sykehouse. Charles does not appear in his father's household.

1861 - Sykehouse. Charles Bellwood, 28, is a farm servant living with George and Susannah Jubb(?) and family.

Ellen Clark is also in Sykehouse, living with her mother who had remarried to William Goodridge. Ellen has two children, John (6), and Hannah (newborn) who might be identical with Sarah Ann listed above-- their birth years are the same.

Ellen had two sons out of wedlock, Jack and William, prior to her marriage to Charles. The boys kept the Bellwood name even though they were never adopted.[2] (This is an interesting story but they do not show up in Charles's family in the census.)

1871 - Hays Park Cottage, Rothwell. Charles, Ellen, and family. He's an agricultural labourer born in Sykehouse. Ellen is also from Sykehouse. Based on the children's birthplaces, they moved to Rothwell c. 1867.

1881 - Clay Terrace, Morley. The older girls are woolen weavers and the older boys are mill hands. The family moved to Morley around the year 1878.

1891 - #119 Gillroyd, Morley. Charles continues as a farm laborer while everyone else is engaged in the wool industry as weavers or machine operators. A William Clark, 58, is in the household as a boarder. He is presumably Ellen's brother.

1901 - #119 Hope Place, Morley. Charles is a widower and four of the children, all adults, are with him.

Charles Jr. and Harriet never married.[3]
