Willie was enrolled at Waltham School. In 1893 he won a prize for attendance and merit based on examination results[2]
In 1902 Willie got on the wrong side of the law when he and two others were remanded for whiskey (valued at 3 shillings) from Robert McNealey's Foresters Hotel. They were caught red-handed by two policemen pouring the whiskey into a bottle. He was bailed on two sureties of 25 pounds.[3]
In 1905 Willie married Minnie French.[4]
