The 1881 Marlborough Town History has the following information:
Charles Russell Bemis, son of William and Hannah (Derby) Bemis, was born in Princeton(?),+ Massachusetts, Dec 5, 1814. His youthful days were spent in Westminster at work on the farm or in his father's shop, until twenty years of age when he learned the painter's trade. He served an apprenticeship with E. and G. Kendall.
He afterwards resided in Ashburnham, and in 1838 moved to Jaffrey, New Hampshire where he married July 12, 1839 Elmira, daughter of Etheel and Rebecca (Baker) Parmenter, (born in Marlborough Jan 9, 1818). After a short residence in Jaffrey, he went to Troy, where he remained until the spring of 1842, when he came to Marlborough to take charge of the Baker farm.
In 1845, in company with Amos A. Mason, he commenced the manufacture of chair seats in the mill since owned by Tarbell & Whitney. He soon sold his interest in the mill and began the same business with Austin G. Parmenter, in the mill now owned by Osgood R. WIswall where he remained for nearly twenty years. His wife died April 7, 1880. There are two children listed.
The above is quoted from "History of the Town of Marlborough - Cheshire County, New Hampshire" [3]
