From the entry in their family bible he was born on 3 Mar 1778. Baptised on 15 Aug 1786 at Dursley. Married Elizabeth Smith on 7 Oct 1801 at St Mary, Walcot, Bath. She was born on 4 Oct 1781 daughter of John Smith, a banker in the Bath City Bank in Union Street, Bath. The Bristol Directory has an entry for William Bendall ‘accomptant’ (accountant) at St Philips Place from 1803 to 1809. The dates and location accord with the birth of daughter Harriet at St Philips Plane and a move to Bath in about 1808/1809. William Bendall was a baker and cornfactor in Bath from about 1809 until 1837 with premises initially at 19 Westgate Street and a mill in Widcombe close to the river Avon. Elizabeth Bendall died on 29 Oct 1827 and was buried in the Baptists Burial Ground in Bath, the entry in the register being ‘Elisabeth Bendall wife of William Bendall Nov. 3 1827 aged 46’. William Bendall married Mary Whitney, widow, at St Michael’s Church, Bristol on 15 Oct 1829 but had no further children. He died on 18 Oct 1837 at 2 Southcot Place, Lyncombe Hill, Bath aged 59 and was buried on 20 Oct in the Baptists Burial Ground (row K no. 3 family vault). A portrait in oils of William Bendall was in the possession of Samuel John Bendall - his grandson - in 1906 and Robin Anthony Bendall in 1995. On 20 Feb 1840, Mary Bendall, aged 50, widow, of No 8 Westgate Buildings, Bath, daughter of John Cumner, farmer, at the Baptist Chapel, Bath, married Isaac Brent, aged 66, widower, gentleman, of No 10 Prior Park Buildings, son of Isaac Brent, weaver, one of the witnesses being Charles Bendall.
